TIRANA, April 16 /ATA/ In his speech at the event presenting the Road Safety Board, created by a group of experts in the field, Interior Minister Ervin Hoxha emphasized that the Albanian government prioritizes road safety. He highlighted that the strengthening of the police force, including the use of technology, allows for comprehensive monitoring of the country’s road networks.

“The situation has changed significantly; the police are no longer the same as before, and neither is the Traffic Police. This includes the strengthening of the Traffic Police through new technology, where speedometers, tools for monitoring road users, and alcohol tests have been integrated into a comprehensive technological package that monitors Albania’s road networks across the country,” said Hoxha.

Minister Hoxha also presented comparative data on the number of lives lost in road accidents per vehicle and per individual from 2012 to the previous year.

Minister Hoxha highlighted that while the number of road fatalities has decreased from 334 in 2012 to 175 in 2024, accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians, which now account for 35% of cases, still need more effort to be addressed as EU countries have already overcome these issues.

“The coefficient of human life loss is lower compared to neighboring countries, but in relation to the EU, we have a less positive ratio. This safety issue is a national challenge that affects the life and well-being of every Albanian family,” Hoxha stated.

The Minister of Interior emphasized that “every avoided accident is a life saved.” To achieve this vision, investments are being made in the concept of smart cities. The Albanian government has signed a loan agreement with Abu Dhabi, paving the way for an ambitious project that will be implemented across the entire country.

“Interurban roads will be monitored through cameras, speed will be measured by radars, and license plates will also be read using this technology. We will also establish a National Traffic Management Center, where many police officers will be involved as the first managers of this modern, European practice. Education and raising awareness among citizens is another important element. Safety starts with our behavior in road traffic.”
