TIRANA, March  31 /ATA/ – By Maela Marini/ The acting chairman of the Democratic Party, Enkelejd Alibeaj, said on Friday that blackmail in politics by means of the files of the former State Security was one of the levers of the political war, so it is necessary to open them.

Alibeaj stressed that the opening of files and lustration should not turn into a political war against opponents.

“The Albanian state and society have failed in a dramatic and ruthless way to overcome one of the moral standards of the post-dictatorship, the punishment of the dictatorship with the instruments that Western Europe has given to the East, one of which is access to State Security documents. For 32 years on end, Albanian politics has not undertaken serious acts to serve the Albanian society,” he said.

Alibeaj emphasized that political blackmail has been the main reason why the state security files have not been opened and the truth has been distorted.

“The political war has used it and this is the biggest harm to this important part of the consciousness of a democratic society. The Albanian society has been offered nothing but oblivion. For this reason, the Albanian society has not been able to do something important, repentance,” he said.

Alibeaj brought to attention the proposal submitted by DP a few months ago to open the state insurance files.

“I believe that random opening, opening them in full and in the service of learning the truth is more important than the hurt it can cause. This is long overdue, but it must be done. It is a moral standard that Albanian society will have to pass in order for the 32- or 33-year transition to end. Otherwise, it will be an outstanding issue and the machete of blackmail in political spheres will continue to hang over us,” he added.
