TIRANA, June 13 /ATA/ Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj highlighted today the need to promote cycling, especially by passionate groups of young people who are turning the use of bicycles into a trend in everyday life, as well as in various forms of sports and entertainment events in the suburbs of Tirana.

Welcoming in his office some young people, “ambassadors” of cycling and bicycles in Tirana, Veliaj said that one of his main challenges is providing the entire road infrastructure of the capital with dedicated bicycle lanes.

“If the main roads of London or Paris are dedicated to bicycles, then there must be an understanding that a part of Tirana streets are also suitable for bicycles. We have some fantastic roads such as Kavaja Street, Durrës Street, Boulevard “Zogu I”, or part of the Ring Road, where the main network of bicycle lanes has already been created, but, in addition to physical infrastructure, a cultural infrastructure is now required. It is not the price, or the weight of the means of transport that distinguishes us as citizens, but it is the culture where we all respect a rider equally like the one who drives his vehicle and the pedestrian, or the one who uses public transport”, said among other things the mayor of Tirana.

He underlined that the latest study of the German GIZ, that is assisting the municipality of Tirana also for bicycle lanes, shows that 70% of car trips in Tirana are for distances less than 5 kilometres.

I understand someone who will go to Durrës, but to go by car to buy bread, or to go to the neighbourhood cafe by car, 70% exaggerated. For health issues, to be fit, to enjoy the fresh air, to make sure that the lessons we learned from the pandemic are not immediately forgotten now that Tirana has opened, we need to encourage this new culture of mobility every day,” he said ensuring that the ambition is to go to a city where cycling should be just as safe as walking./p.s./
