TIRANA, Nov 11 /ATA/ – Gazment Bardhi, head of the Democratic Party’s parliamentary group, on Tuesday condemned the 10-day suspension of opposition leader Sali Berisha from Albania’s parliament, calling it an unconstitutional act of censorship.

Bardhi stated that the decision represented “an unprecedented act and a serious setback” for parliamentary democracy.

He accused the ruling Socialist majority of turning the legislature into “a one-party institution where rules and laws are openly violated.”

“The majority has decided to prevent Sali Berisha from exercising his duties in parliament for 10 days without any breach of the rules,” Bardhi said in a statement. “This shows that its lawmakers serve the political interests of Prime Minister Edi Rama, not those of citizens.”

He described the move as “arbitrary and unlawful,” saying it violated the opposition’s rights and sought to silence dissent.

“Such acts will fail – they will only make the truth louder,” Bardhi said, adding that opposition lawmakers would respond proportionally to any further provocations to restore normal democratic functioning in parliament.
