TIRANA, June 1 /ATA/ Democratic Party chairman Sali Berisha said on Monday that his party strongly supports foreign investment, as he commented on the tourism project in Zvërnec.

Speaking outside the Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office, where he appeared under a court order to report regularly, Berisha also denounced violence against a protester, accusing authorities of suppressing dissent.

Berisha said he had no official documents on the Zvërnec tourism project but had closely followed media publications. He stressed that the Democratic Party remains committed to backing international investors in Albania.

Berisha said at a media briefing on Monday that a past law had fully resolved property ownership disputes, ensuring that foreign investors were protected when projects were approved by the government.

He went on saying that under the legislation, if the government approved a project based on original state ownership and cadastral documents, any subsequent disputes would be settled by compensating the investor at market value. He said the measure provided complete clarity and security for foreign investment.

Berisha explained the law was deemed necessary because foreign investors often faced extortion, unlike domestic ones. He said the measure obliged the government to assume responsibility when documents had been signed unlawfully, stressing that the state was required to respond with compensation at market prices.

Berisha argued that during his tenure, no landowners protested against foreign investors, as the law required the state to compensate at market value if property rights were violated. He said the measure ensured clarity and accountability, making the government responsible for any unlawful signatures on ownership documents.
