TIRANA, Feb 21 /ATA/ – The chairman of the Socialist Party (SP) parliamentary group Taulant Balla on Saturday condemned remarks by opposition Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha, who warned of “annihilating attacks” against ruling Socialist Party offices across Albania.

In a public statement, Balla described the comments as an open call to commit criminal acts and incite violence, hatred and division, saying such rhetoric poses a serious concern for public order and security.

“A public call to commit criminal offences, incitement to violence and the involvement of minors in criminal acts are clear criminal violations. It is up to the competent authorities to assess them and act in accordance with the law,” Balla said.

He also addressed members and supporters of the Democratic Party, urging them not to fall prey to escalating rhetoric.

Earlier today, opposition leader Berisha warned that the main opposition DP would target the ruling SP offices across the country if his party headquarters are attacked again.

Berisha claimed tear gas was fired at the DP headquarters during Friday’s unrest in Tirana.

He added that the DP would respond “as you deserve” if further action is taken against its offices.

TIRANA, Nov 6 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama apologized on Thursday to European Union Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos over offensive remarks made by the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha concerning the EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, and the country’s new gender equality law.

The government head said Berisha’s comments misrepresented a law “fully aligned with EU principles on gender equality and non-discrimination.”

“We apologize for the insulting way in which a very noble law, fully aligned with EU principles of gender equality and non-discrimination, has been misused to distort public perception, and for the way the EU Ambassador has been exploited for such an ignoble purpose. Nevertheless, as we say in Albanian, let the dogs bark, the caravan moves on,” PM Rama said in a statement on X.

Earlier today, Commissioner Kos condemned Berisha’s statements, calling attacks on the EU Ambassador unacceptable.

“Gender equality and non-discrimination are an integral part of EU law. Aligning with it is part of the EU accession process. This is not a private demand of the EU Ambassador to Albania. Any attacks on him are unacceptable,” Commissioner Kos said on X.

Earlier in parliament, Berisha claimed Ambassador Gonzato had pressured the Albanian legislature to pass the gender equality bill, asserting that the Ambassador cannot impose personal beliefs on Albanian society.
