TIRANA, Oct 24 /ATA/ – A preliminary court hearing on for the main opposition Democratic Party leader and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and four others was postponed on Thursday and the corruption case on privatization of Partizani sport complex will continue on November 25.

Defense lawyers challenged the validity of legal notifications, claiming that the notifications were sent before the legal deadline was to expire.

Judge Flojera Davidhi agreed to the delay, citing the procedural issue and the sheer size of the case file.

Berisha’s lawyer, Genc Gjokutaj told reporters that the legal defense team would demand that the case be dismissed.

“Due to the invalidity of the notice and the exceptional volume of the file, the hearing has been rescheduled for November 25,” lawyer Gjokutaj said.

SPAK, Albania’s Special Prosecutor’s Office, submitted the massive 333-volume file to the court last week, accusing Berisha of corruption during the privatization of the “Partizani” complex. The charges implicate Berisha’s son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi, alongside Fatmir Bektashi, a businessman, and others in money laundering schemes tied to the deal.

Both Berisha and Malltezi deny the accusations, claiming the investigation is politically motivated and lacking evidence. SPAK, however, believes it has uncovered substantial wrongdoing, with Bektashi allegedly bribing officials to facilitate the scheme.
