TIRANA, April 3 /ATA/ The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, during a conversation with residents in Baldushk, unveiled the program for the May 11 elections, with special focus on supporting agriculture and improving living conditions for farmers.

According to Berisha, approximately 500,000 Albanians are employed in rural areas, contributing around 19% of the country’s total production.

Therefore, according to him, “no sector is more important than the agricultural sector in Albania.”
Berisha emphasized the need to increase subsidies for farmers, enhance production, and invest in agricultural infrastructure, including the processing of products and the improvement of agricultural services.
Furthermore, the chairman of the Democratic Party pledged to raise pensions for agricultural cooperative pensioners to 200 euros and to increase the minimum wage to 500 euros.

Outlining his program on agriculture, Berisha also highlighted the importance of digitalization and the adoption of modern technologies in agriculture, along with the protection of land and the growth of other agricultural sectors, including the growing of fruit-trees, aromatic and medicinal herbs.

Berisha emphasized the necessity of investing in irrigation and drainage systems to ensure the sustainable development of the sector.
According to him, the Democratic Party’s program sticks to the profile of fruit tree cultivation that was implemented in the years 2005-2013.
“2013 recorded 11.2 million olive trees, and our goal is to increase that number to 20 million and to go even beyond it. Additionally, we are dedicated to expanding the cultivation of pomegranates and nuts. Our aim is to triple the area planted with nuts and pomegranates. We will also make every effort to promote the growing of aromatic plants, a highly valuable yet underutilized resource of our country,” he added.

In terms of support for farmers, Berisha proposed the establishment of a fund that would protect them from natural disasters and damages caused by external factors.
Berisha promised an increase in subsidies for farmers, ensuring direct support for them. He emphasized that he would quintuple the subsidies for farmers, bringing them on par with those in neighboring countries such as North Macedonia and Kosovo.
Additionally, Berisha promised that the state would cover 80% of the interest on loans that farmers would take out for the development of their farms, including for greenhouses, nurseries, livestock, and other agricultural sectors.
