“Yesterday evening, upon my return from a business trip abroad, I was contacted by SPAK/BKH officers, who requested me to present myself in their premises, to communicate and hand a copy of the decision dated November 16, 2023 , delivered by the special judge, Erjon Bani, on the basis of the request made by the Prosecution itself, through which it was decided that for the purposes of the criminal proceedings initiated in 2020, related to the so-called case of sterilization I was put under security measure “mandatory appearance before the Judicial Police” and ” barred from leaving the country”, explains Beqaj.

Beqaj said that despite reservations about some aspects of the decision and even though his lawyers, having identified a series of procedural and material breaches, at this stage of the process have suggested challenging this decision, he has decided not to appeal this decision and to willfully comply with the requirements and guarantees that this investigative process requires for its smooth and orderly conduct.

“My availability to shed light on the truth of this case as soon as possible goes beyond the limitations of my personal freedoms and even beyond a normal time line, already several years,” he said.
In addition, Beqaj said that “to guarantee the integrity of the investigative process and to avoid any possible misinterpretation of my influence as an official in this process, I have also decided to submit my resignation as head of the State Agency for Strategic Programming and Coordination of Aid.”

I firmly believe that what we achieved with sterilization was a necessity and the best possible thing we could do in achieving the ambitious objective of taking care of the health of Albanians.
