TIRANA, Jan 20 /ATA/ – Albania’s parliament began its final VIII session of the current X legislature on Monday afternoon. The session will be the last before the May 11 elections, which will see 140 new MPs elected for the next four years.

The parliament session started with the National Anthem.

Parliament Speaker Elisa Spiropali delivered a speech, saying the changes to the country’s Electoral Code to allow Albanian expats to cast their vote in the upcoming May 11 general elections was one of the main achievements during the current legislature of the Albanian Assembly.

“Much was said, but little was done to deliver on this opportunity for the parliamentary election process,” Spiropali said in her address.

She praised the four parliamentary groups for supporting the changes to the Electoral Code to allow diaspora to cast their ballots in the elections in the country.

“The changes to the Code helped in narrowing the democratic deficit in our political system between the diaspora contribution to the country’s development and failure to meet the practical conditions, allowing them to exercise their right to vote from the countries they work and live,” Speaker Spiropali said, urging Albanian expats to register and cast their ballots in the upcoming general elections on May 11, 2025.

Parliament Speaker also highlighted Albania’s progress on the path towards the European Union accession.

“Acceleration of Albania’s EU membership process was another important achievement during this legislature. We proudly claim that EU accession speed has been faster than during any other period during this legislature since the country obtained the EU candidate status,” she said.

Spiropali underlined that the second and third Intergovernmental Conferences with the EU took place in the last months of the previous session, leading to the opening of respective negotiation clusters, namely on foreign relations and policy and security and defence.
