TIRANA, February 17/ATA/ The Ballie Mosque in Elbasan has been selected as one of the five most beautiful religious buildings in the world, in the final of the prestigious “Building of the Year 2025” award by ArchDaily.

This evaluation is an extraordinary achievement for Albanian architecture and especially for religious architecture in our country. This mosque is now competing with four other buildings from China, Canada, Bangladesh and Chile.

The mosque extends over an area of about 1900 square meters and consists of four floors, which in addition to the place of prayer also include conference rooms and offices for the staff of Elbasan Mufti.

The Ballie Mosque is distinguished by an innovative design that skillfully combines Islamic tradition with modern elements, creating a unique and inspiring space for believers and visitors. Its architecture represents a new and advanced approach to the construction of religious buildings, preserving identity and cultural values, but also adapting to contemporary demands and aesthetics.

The Ballie Mosque is one of the oldest buildings in Elbasan, built by Hasan Balliu in 1608 in the city center of Elbasan.

The communist regime in 1967 ordered its demolition. It has been a symbol of Elbasan, one of the most beautiful and oldest. It is otherwise called the “blue mosque” for the beauty and grandeur it had. After many years, the Ballie Mosque was rebuilt much more magnificent than the old one in the city center of Elbasan and has become an identity. The most attractive element of the mosque destroyed during the communist regime was the minaret that competed with all the others with its original decorative design.

Today, the rebuilt mosque has adapted the classic to the modern. There are rooms for ablution, for women’s prayer and an environment for men’s prayer. The capacity is 1500 believers only inside, but there is also space outside. /a.f/r.e/p.s./
