TIRANA, Sept 21 /ATA/ Addressing the 22nd meeting of the EU-Albania Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee (SAPC), Democratic Party parliamentary group chairman Gazment Bardhi claimed that parliamentary oversight has been severely eroded. Bardhi noted that the ruling majority has systematically turned down opposition demands for inquiry committees, as well as at least seven motions for Q&A sessions.

“Over the past year of this legislative term, the Prime Minister has not accepted a single interpellation or request for accountability from the opposition. There are seven such requests in one year that the Prime Minister has refused to accept,” Bardhi stated.

The head of the Democratic Party parliamentary group also raised concerns regarding the ruling majority’s failure to respect decisions issued by the Constitutional Court.

“The parliamentary majority re-enacted a law that has been struck down by the Constitutional Court three separate times, disregarding the standards the Court had mandated Parliament to follow. The Prime Minister made it clear in plenary session that while the Constitutional Court can review and strike down a law, it cannot dictate how we vote,” Bardhi stated.

According to opposition MPs, genuine European integration requires more than enacting laws with European labels—it demands institutions that function by European standards. Bardhi stressed that success shouldn’t be measured solely by closing chapters, but by ‘opening a new chapter for Albania, anchored by stronger democratic institutions and an empowered Parliament.'”
