TIRANA, March 26 /ATA/ – The increase in household consumption and business investments reflects the sound financial balance sheets, the confidence in the future, and the favorable lending conditions, the Governor of the Bank of Albania Gent Sejko told a press conference after the meeting of the Bank’s Supervisory Council on Wednesday.

Sejko said that lending to the private sector has kept growing, averaging 16.7% in the first two months of the year.

According to him, increased bank lending to economy has been mainly driven by the relatively low policy rate and credit interest rates, as well as the banking sector’s positive approach to lending have led to these conditions.

The Governor said that the notable development over the past two quarters has been the rebound of lending in foreign currency, as interest rates in European markets fell and the investment loans for businesses went up rapidly.

“Lending in foreign currency recorded an average increase of 20% during the first two months of the year, fuelling the expansion of production capacities. Also, the non-performing loans ratio fell to 4.06% in February, recording a new historic low level in over a decade,” Sejko noted.

Sejko said that “the stability of the financial system, along with improvements in fiscal and external sustainability indicators, have led to an upgrade in Albania’s sovereign credit rating. In March 2025, the rating agency Standard & Poor’s upgraded Albania’s sovereign credit rating to BB.”
