TIRANA, Feb 6 /ATA/ – Lek-denominated bank deposits in Albania rose 4.8% year-on-year to 692 billion lek in 2024 or around 50 billion lek more than in 2023, data from the Bank of Albania show.

According to central bank, both businesses and individuals increased their bank savings in 2024.

Albanian currency-denominated deposits saw strongest growth in December 2024 with 24 billion lek, reflecting increased remittances during the end of year holiday season.

Bank savings denominated in Euro and Dollar also increased last year. Central bank said that deposits in foreign values rose 10% on the year to 744 million euros.

The increase in deposit interest rates is being driven by a higher demand by the banking sector for funds in the national currency for local currency. A sharp increase in lending in Albanian currency was observed in 2024.

TIRANA, Aug 29 /ATA/ – Deposits made by individual customers at banks in Albania have shown a steady upward trend during the last year, reflecting the citizens’ confidence in the country’s economic stability and the positive performance of the banking sector.

Latest data from the Bank of Albania show that total of deposits in Albanian banking system amounted to 1.31 trillion lek in end of July, recording a 6.8% increase compared with the same period of the previous year, when deposits were estimated at 1.23 trillion lek.

More specifically, a steady increase was registered particularly in the first months of 2024, with a slight decrease in March and April and recovering in the following months.

The increase has been driven by the expansion of foreign currencies-denominated bank deposits that rose 5% to 718 billion lek in July 2024 from 684 billion in July 2023.

On the other hand, lek-denominated deposits have also significantly increased during the reviewed period, expanding 9% year-on-year to 595 billion lek, up from 546 billion lek in July 2023.

According to the Bank of Albania, the euro-denominated bank deposits increased by 1.9% or by 130 million euros compared with the previous month of June.

The euro-denominated deposits recorded strength growth in July and August thanks to the increased remittances as Albanian emigrants return back home to spend holidays with their families during this period.

Other factors driving growth in foreign currency-denominated deposits include also the tourism season, the improved economic activity and the growing public investments that have helped businesses to increase their liquidity capabilities.

According to banking system experts, although the Europe’s single currency has lost ground against Albanian currency Lek, the Albanian citizens keep on trusting Euro as the currency to preserve value of their savings.

According to the Bank of Albania, the euro-denominated bank deposits increased by 73 million euros in April alone or by 180 million euros since start of the year.

According to banking system experts, although the Europe’s single currency is losing ground against Albanian currency Lek, the Albanian citizens keep on trusting Euro as the currency to preserve value of their savings.

Another factor driving growth in foreign currency-denominated deposits is also the improved economic activity and the growing public investments that have helped businesses to increase their liquidity capabilities.
