TIRANA, Oct. 19 /ATA/ – Banks in Albania have temporarily closed 33 branches and reduced hours at 27 others amid ongoing student protests in the capital, while continuing to provide services through digital platforms and branches operating normally.

According to notices issued by eight commercial banks for Oct. 19, the measures affect branches in Tirana and Durrës and are intended to protect customers and staff.

The National Commercial Bank (Banka Kombëtare Tregtare BKT) announced the temporary closure of 12 branches in Tirana, directing customers to its electronic services, which allow banking transactions throughout the day.

Other banks have also adjusted their operations. Raiffeisen Bank temporarily closed five branches in Tirana, while Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Albania announced restrictions at several locations, including branches that will provide services only until 1 p.m.

OTP Bank closed two branches and reduced operating hours at eight others, while ABI Bank said eight branches in Tirana would operate until midday. Credins Bank shortened hours at six branches and announced the closure of another location.

Union Bank closed three branches in Tirana, while Fibank temporarily suspended services at its branches near the Twin Towers and the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

ProCredit Bank said its branches and agencies in Tirana and other cities continued to operate as usual.

Customers can use mobile banking apps, internet banking and ATMs to make payments, transfer funds and carry out other transactions, depending on the services offered by each bank. Union Bank also announced commission-free cash withdrawals at ATMs in Albania, including those operated by other banks.

Banks have urged customers to check official notices before visiting branches, as opening hours and service availability may vary by location.

The measures are intended to adapt in-person services to current security conditions while maintaining access to financial services for households and businesses. The temporary closure of individual branches does not mean banking operations as a whole have been suspended, the banks said.
