TIRANA, July 5 /ATA/ Albania has managed to monitor through two satellites launched into space, Albania 1 and Albania 2, 47% of the territory, or an area of 13,416 km.

Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, also Minister for Infrastructure and Energy, said on Wednesday that with the introduction of satellite services, Albania is rapidly navigating its way to the use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning.

According to her, the main objective of the satellite service is monitoring the territory and providing access to the data obtained through the satellites.

“The satellite service will provide the Albanian government with full management authority over the information obtained from the service, and the goal is to ensure data to address the needs of the beneficiary institutions,” said Balluku.

With the launch of two Albanian satellites, on January 3, 2023, Albania has become the second country in the region, after Slovenia, which has its own constellation of satellites in space.

“With the dedicated satellite constellation, Albania joins the new space economy, developing its involvement in the space community, using the power of high-resolution satellite images, which enable the realization of our ambitions as a NATO member country,” Balluku said.

“As part of this project, the country will be able to address urgent issues that include the management of agriculture, cultivation of illegal crops, unauthorized construction activity, monitoring of floods and wildfires, as well as the assessment of damage caused by natural disasters. But environmental monitoring will also be done through high-quality images and capacity throughout the country”, said the deputy prime minister.

A team of experts from all institutions have started training at SATELLOGIC for the use of advanced technology for processing and analyzing satellite images.

“Nevertheless, we have managed to cover 47% of the country’s surface, or 13,416 km 2, through the capture of 111 images, which have a width of 5 km,” Balluku announced.
