TIRANA, Aug 18 /ATA/ The last stage of works is being implemented in Kavaja to set to operation the new water supply system, which guarantees 24- hour supply of drinking water for the residents of this city.

Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, was on Wednesday in Kavaja where she saw first-hand the works that are being carried out for the completion of water supply system.

“Kavaja will be the next city, which will address the shortage of drinking water supply. The construction of new water supply system is towards completion and within a short time this facility, which guarantees a 24 hour supply of drinking water for inhabitants of this city, will be in full operation. Meanwhile, the work continues uninterruptedly in all other construction sites across the country,” Balluku said.

Making an overview of Kavaja water supply, Balluku said that, “the water supply system was built around ‘72. The pipes were galvanized steel. Several attempts have been made to conduct a requalification of the system, even in the years ‘92-93, through a loan, one of the first loans extended by KfW to improve this system. Several attempts were made to increase the water capacity in Kavaja, but always by drilling wells. It was decided to bring water from the Çermë area and another attempt was made in 2015.”

Despite the efforts, the water supply shortage was not definitely tackled given that the investment in water supply systems has not responded to the great demographic shift. ”
