“As I have made known during my first exchanges with directors of the State Police, representatives of institutions, but also with citizens throughout the country, the Police and other law enforcement agencies need some changes in their vision and mission. I found that the public and the citizens have welcomed these new approaches in the relations of the Police with the law and the citizens,” Balla said.

Balla stressed the importance of prioritizing communication, cooperation and partnership with the citizens and as well as awareness functions of the Police and law enforcement agencies.

“The efficiency of Police work does not hinge on the power of the police, but on the rule of law.
The police should be more self-correcting and should be perceived only as a symbol of legitimacy. The police should be a model, a reference for the citizens,” he added.

Balla emphasized that in any case breaking the law has serious consequences for society, but when the laws are breached by the police, the consequences are many times more serious.

“This undermines public trust not just in the Police, but in the state and the rule of law. Yet, these improvements in the vision and mission of the Police are not enabled simply because I ask for them or because the citizens support them. They also require legal support and we will start working on this,” the minister emphasized.
