TIRANA, Aug 23 /ATA/ – Prominent journalist, publicist and former director of the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) Artur Zheji passed away on Saturday at the age of 64 while on holiday in the southern coastal town of Saranda.

State Police said in a press statement that around 16:10 local time, Zheji experienced health problems while at a restaurant near “Butrinti” street in Saranda. He passed away on the way to hospital.

With a career spanning decades, Zheji was widely regarded as one of Albania’s leading voices in journalism, political analysis and public debate. He held senior positions at several media outlets, including Radio Television of Albania and ATA, and in recent years hosted the political talk show 360 Gradë on a private TV Channel.

Born on 29 August 1961, Zheji was the son of noted intellectual Petro Zheji and acclaimed actress Besa Imami. A graduate in stage directing from the Higher Institute of Arts, he left his mark early in Albanian theatre with his diploma play Raimonda, staged at the National Theater.

During a decade spent in Italy, he worked with Radio Radicale as a specialist on European and Balkan affairs during the Kosovo conflict, becoming an important voice for Albanians abroad.

Zheji leaves behind his wife, two daughters and a son. His sudden death has deeply affected family, colleagues and the wider public, who remember him for his integrity, professionalism and lasting contribution to Albanian media and political commentary.

Minister of State for the Diaspora, Taulant Balla was the first to extend his condolences.

“Very, very saddened by the untimely passing of journalist Artur Zheji. Rest in peace, my friend,” Balla said.

The Ministry of Economy, Culture and Innovation praised Zheji’s contribution to media and public life, as well as to the stage arts as a director and author. “His professional legacy remains part of Albania’s cultural and journalistic history. Our condolences to his family, colleagues and the media community,” the Ministry said in a statement.

National Theater: “In his work, words became a reflection of time and society, enriching not only media and public debate but also our national stage. His memory will remain alive in the history of art and culture.”

Albanian Journalists’ Association: “Zheji was one of the most respected figures in Albanian journalism, leaving an indelible mark through his analyses, writings and contributions to critical and professional thought.”
