TIRANA, July 12 /ATA/ The National Art Gallery in Tirana, another cultural monument is undergoing restoration to create decent spaces for artworks and artists.

Prime Minister Edi Rama on Friday shared pictures of the operation on the site of the National Art Gallery in Tirana.

“The National Art Gallery in Tirana is being revitalized with new exhibition spaces, a library, laboratories and a new concept of halls”, says Rama.

The investment of the state budget does not aim to alienate the current building, but to preserve and expand the existing spaces by doubling the volume from the back of the building. From today’s 4,600 m2, the museum will expand to 10,100 m2.
NAG originated from the efforts of a group of Albanian artists and the Arts Committee of 1946.
Pinakoteka was the first institution of visual arts in Albania. After a real work and many efforts, on January 11, 1954, the Art Gallery in Tirana was officially opened to the public.
In 1956, as a result of enriching the fund of works of art, from the flourishing of creativity and the acquisitions of the time, the Gallery was moved to a three floor building on “Fortuzi” street with ample exhibition spaces, such as both inside and outside it.
New visions about the development and exhibition of fine arts as well as acquisitions increased the number of works of art and in turn required a more functional building, which was inaugurated on November 29, 1974, on “Dëshmorët e Kombit” boulevard. This is also the moment of the first reorganization and reconstruction, which consisted in the establishment of an administrative structure, consisting of several relevant sectors and in function of artistic activities.
