Prime Minister Edi Rama took to social networks on Sunday to post images showing the archaeological expedition, showcasing pieces of history from the underground.

PM Rama said that the preliminary research suggest that the find in that archaeological site is thought to be part of a rural complex of Villa Rustica type, dating back as early third of fourth century AD.

“The monument is a precious cultural asset for the area of Belsh and the country’s cultural heritage.  The restorers are working on the project of conservation and restoration of the monument in tandem with the archaeological excavation so that the monument becomes available for visitors,” the Premier said.

This special find will be an added value for the Belsh area, allowing everyone to go deeper into the area’s history bringing deeper and also enriching the area with a new archaeological site.

Village of Rrase, 3 km from the town  of Belsh, is home to this settlement, where apart from the ruins of a second century Roman building, ancient remains have been discovered too. The remains prove that the area has been a very ancient settlement of a civilization.

The Minister of Culture Elva Margariti says that in addition to the archaeological excavation, the geophysical prospecting is being conducted as a joint project of the Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Archaeology, in an expedition led by prof. Neritan Ceka and Skënder Mucaj.

“Bylis National Archaeological Park in October welcomes the expedition of the Institute of Archaeology, which has been working for three years now as part of the project led by Professor Luan Perzhita and Olgita Ceka, in the excavation of the cistern of the ancient city Bylis, while carrying out the site’s restoration too,” Culture Minister said.

The Academy of Sciences said that an inscription dating back to the III century BC was unearthed on the first day of the excavations.
