TIRANA, September 25/ATA/ Archaeologists of the Archaeological Directorate at the National Institute of Cultural Heritage have successfully carried out an excavation in the village of Shënmri during which there was discovered a cemetery dating back to two important historical periods: the Hellenistic and medieval periods.

Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation Blendi Gonxhja praised this archaeological discovery as extraordinary because it sheds light on the history and life of the ancient inhabitants of this area.

During excavations, the archaeologists have discovered funerary structures containing ceramic vessels, silver, bronze, iron and glass ornaments, as well as weapons and personal objects. These unique findings offer great opportunities to study the lifestyle and customs of both periods.

The ornaments discovered in the medieval graves resemble those of the Arbër culture previously found in Koman, Kruja, Lezha and Përmet, indicating a wide cultural distribution in Albania.

For the first time the findings of Arbër culture are discovered in the area of Tirana, adding extraordinary value to the cultural heritage of the capital.

National Institute of Cultural Heritage experts will continue to document and analyze the discoveries, while the next step will be to locate the settlements that should be close to the discovered cemetery./p.s./
