Berisha visited the Vatican’s Apostolic Nunciature in Tirana on Wednesday and signed the condolence book to honor His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday in Vatican City aged 88.

Speaking to reporters after the visit, Berisha hailed Pope Francis as the prominent Pope of peace and distinguished friend of the Albanian nation.

“Albania was one of the first countries he visited after inauguration to the papal throne of the Holy See,” Berisha stated.

Opposition leader added that he has been lucky to briefly meet and speak with Pope Francis on his inauguration day.

“It was an extraordinary event for Albania and the entire Western civilization, when Pope Francis beatified 38 martyrs of the Albanian Catholic church, who fell to become immortal for their faith in God and Christ during Enver Hoxha’s Stalinist dictatorship,” Berisha added.
