TIRANA, July 3 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Friday that Albania’s public institutions are, for the first time, systematically engaged in the fight against corruption, as part of broader state-building reforms.

Speaking at an event during Public Administration Week 2026 titled “Shape Albania’s European Future,” Rama said anti-corruption efforts must be rooted in institutions and long-term administrative structures rather than individual action.

The government head pointed to the need for oversight mechanisms that monitor how public services operate in practice, including through unannounced inspections and institutional controls.

He said identifying problems was not sufficient unless accompanied by systemic change.

“The fight against corruption is not only about immediate reaction or punishment, but about building a functional and sustainable system,” he said. “What is happening today in Albania is that, for the first time, the system itself is fighting corruption.”

He said Albania remains at an early stage of state institutional development compared with long-established EU member states, while acknowledging that meeting European Union standards remains a major challenge for the public administration.
