Earlier this year, I stood at Nova. There are places where silence speaks louder than words, and Nova is one of them. Young people from many nations had gathered there to dance, to laugh, to celebrate life, and their lives were stolen by the darkness of hatred and terror.

In Albania, we have one word that contains an entire moral code: Besa. A promise that cannot be broken.

In Europe’s darkest hour, our grandparents kept that promise by sheltering Jews from the Holocaust, risking everything to save people marked for death.

Today, that inheritance demands something of us. It demands that memory never surrender to indifference, that grief never be abandoned to loneliness, that antisemitism never again be allowed to hide behind silence, slogans or excuses, and that we remain faithful to our friends even through their darkest hours.

More than 1,200 people were killed in southern Israel during the 7 October 2023 terrorist attack, which began at the Nova music festival, while around 250 people were taken hostage and brought to the Gaza Strip.
