TIRANA, Nov 23 /ATA/ At the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Center, thanks to the professionalism of the neurosurgery medical team, an urgent case involving a 48-year-old patient was successfully treated.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared this case on social media, describing it as a success story in the Neurosurgery Service at QSUNT, where Prof. Artur Xhumari and his team saved the life of a patient.

Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Artur Xhumari and the neurosurgery team at QSUNT, a seven-hour surgical operation made it possible to close an open cyst in the 48-year-old patient’s head, which had caused hemorrhaging.

“It concerns a 48-year-old woman who came to our hospital’s emergency department because she had a hemorrhage in her head, and we know that most of these hemorrhages occur as a result of an aneurysm. The aneurysm is confirmed through an angio-CT scan, which was performed as soon as the patient arrived in the emergency room. The angio-CT scan shows the cause of the hemorrhage, which is a cyst located at the end of the basilar artery,” Xhumari said.

“The primary risk associated with aneurysms is their potential to rupture, leading to hemorrhage, which can be fatal. When the initial bleeding is controlled and the patient is stabilized, our responsibility is to identify the underlying source. Once the aneurysm is confirmed, it must be closed within two to three days, as the probability of rebleeding during this period is extremely high,” he explained.

According to Prof. Dr. Xhumari, there are two techniques for securing an aneurysm: the endovascular approach, which is performed through the patient’s arterial system, and open surgical intervention—the method used in this case.

“A surgical clip is applied to the neck of the aneurysm, blocking blood flow into the sac and eliminating the risk of further rupture. These conditions are often unpredictable; they may be triggered by a headache, a trauma, and are ultimately identified through diagnostic imaging,” Xhumari explained.

Prof. Dr. Xhumari noted that the patient presented with an exceptionally severe headache.

“No other pathology produces a headache of this intensity. The intervention is performed in a deeply situated region of the brain, and in this case, the procedure lasted seven hours,” Xhumari explained. He emphasized that the patient is being discharged neurologically intact and fully recovered, as intraoperative assessment confirmed complete cessation of blood flow to the affected vascular segment.

On her part, the patient, Enkelejda, stated that she arrived at the hospital unconscious.

“After I came out of surgery, with the help of the staff—who are wonderful—I am feeling much better. They have responded to everything, they haven’t left me alone for even a second. I have no words,” she said.

This is yet another testimony to the high level of professionalism and dedication of the medical staff, as well as to the reliability of the public health service for every citizen.
