TIRANA, February 1/ATA/ Constitutionalist Aurela Anastasi, a member of the Academy of Sciences, stated in an interview given to the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) that: “Albania is a unitary state and does not have a tradition of the Senate as a chamber of the Parliament. Meanwhile, the proposal for the reduction of the number of MPs from 140 to 100 should be subject of analysis because from a constitutional point of view it is particularly related to the norm of representation of the people in the highest representative body”.

Asked about the proposal to amend the Constitution to reduce the number of MPs in the Parliament, Anastasi stated that first of all, the constitutional amendments should serve as an opportunity for strengthening democracy.

Therefore, she highlighted the significance of citizen participation through discussion and public consultation on constitutional amendments.

“So far, there is talk only about the creation of a commission that will draft the amendments until the end of this legislature,” said Anastasi.

According to her, it is very important the process of citizen consultation on the suggested amendments.

“It seems like there is time, but this time is valuable only if it is not wasted,” concluded Anastasi. /r.e//a.g/p.s./
