The legislation was approved by lawmakers earlier this month to see those serving shorter sentences for lesser crimes, those over a certain age, and many female prisoners released or benefiting from sentence reductions.

A total of 700 inmates will be pardoned and released immediately out of 1100 convicts, who will have their sentences reduced and trial suspended under the pardon.

As many as 2700 individuals currently on probation will also benefit from the amnesty.

The scope of the law already published on the Official Gazette covers only 5% of criminal offenses under the Criminal Code, while 95% of other offenses will not be subject to amnesty. Under the amnesty, male inmates will see their sentence reduced by 1.5 years, while female inmates will see sentence cut by 2 years. In the meantime, 11 women and 11 juveniles will be released immediately.
