The newest political party is a union of some figures who are no longer members of the Democratic Party led by Sali Berisha, nor of the Euro-Atlantic Democrats led by Lulzim Basha, with whom they had disagreements.

In a statement to the media, Alibeaj read the Charter of Principles and Values ​​of this new party, which, according to him, “is based on five main pillars of freedom: the individual, property, family, self-government and faith”.

Addressing the electoral assembly of the DP in Mallakaster, Alibeaj said that “Albania’s future will include an active justice system.”

“The party unification can take place based on the following values: uncompromised justice, Euro-Atlantic course, no persona non grata within us, free and fair elections based on open candidate lists, and distancing from any corrupt individual within our party,” the DP senior official said.

“This is our final position. This is a fight for the future of Albania and it is not about who can gain more votes. The future of Albania will be that of a country where the justice system acts, where people freely elect their representatives, who govern without involving in corruption practices,” he stated.

Alibeaj said that, “The Democratic Party is determined to vote only one draft law on Penal Amnesty, which serves ordinary and vulnerable citizens and which does not include the officials investigated by SPAK and tried in the Court of Serious Crimes and Corruption”.

“We welcome the withdrawal of the ruling majority from its stance, excluding those convicted of corruption by the Court of Serious Crimes and Corruption; this implies an unconditional support for the institutions of the SPAK and the Court. DP lawmaker Enkelejd Alibeaj, presenting forwarded the amendments to the Parliamentary Committee on Security, said that the proposal includes individuals participating in protests against demolition of the National Theatre and against demolition of houses and businesses in Tirana’s Astir area.

“I would like to clarify one last thing. This is a proposal tabled by DP as part of its political responsibility it has assumed and every political group should assume when it comes to organizing protests,” Alibeaj said.

In a press statement, Alibeaj apologized to reporters and civil society representatives, who were attending the Committee meeting.

Alibeaj said that DP calls for an open candidate list and national proportional system to be applied in the upcoming elections in Albania.

“The Constitutional Court has ordered the Assembly of Albania that the electoral code be based on the open candidates list to allow citizens to directly elect their representatives and be them the ones to elect their lawmakers and not the party chairman,” Alibeaj said.

According to him, an open list system would also allow Albanian voters to determine the element of the electoral race within the political parties.

He stated that such a system is an obligation to optimize and democratize the political parties and an open list system would deliver on such a process and would ultimately deny the party chairman of the authority to nominate the candidates to run for a seat in parliament.

“Sali Berisha spares not a single day to issue slanders against the Democratic Party and the majority of private TV channels, headed by the public broadcaster, have become Berisha’s mouthpiece. Alibeaj and the mayoral candidate Roland Bejko revealed their program for Tirana in the next four years.

“The importance of the local elections for the Democratic Party and Tirana in particular has been clearly stated. Although I acknowledge the situation is complicated for the DP in the May 14 elections. This is the moment for the Albanian decisions to make the difference,” Alibeaj said.

He expressed confidence that DP will definitely be a governing alternative in a near future.

In a post on social networks, Alibeaj wrote that the meeting focused on the election campaign and the preparation of the DP for the May 14 local elections.

“During the conversation, we touched on important topics of recent developments, where we focused on the DP’s preparations for the election campaign and the issues of these elections. I emphasized the government’s refusal to address ODHIR’s recommendations in the Electoral Code. Alibeaj commemorated the four democracy heroes, Arben Broci, Nazmi Kryeziu, Bujar Bishanaku and Besnik Çeka who were killed during an anti-government protest in 1991 in the city of Shkodra.

With deep reflection on what and why the legacy of anti-communism, freedom and democracy has not yet been fulfilled. A communist mentality only can desecrate the memory of the heroes of April 2, attacking all those who think differently from him,” Alibeaj wrote in a reference to long-time DP leader and ex-Prime Minister Sali Berisha.

“Those who gave their lives on April 2 in the name of freedom and democracy that has been missing for decades deserve the highest respect and honor today,” he said.
