Prime Minister Edi Rama shared footage of the road on social media on Tuesday, describing its transformation against the backdrop of northern Albania’s spectacular landscape.

Reconstruction of the Koman road began in February last year under a project worth around 2.5 billion leks.

The upgraded road is expected not only to enhance the tourist experience, with trips across Lake Koman by ferry increasingly included in travel itineraries, but also to improve living conditions for local communities and create opportunities for sustainable economic development in the area.

The transformation of the Koman road adds another revitalised asset to northern Albania’s tourism infrastructure, while reinforcing a strategic transport link for the sector’s development.

The festival runs from August 21 to 23, offering three days and two nights of activities, from sunset to sunrise, against the backdrop of Theth’s rugged mountain landscape.

Prime Minister Edi Rama on Friday described Theth as a place where “nature is the most beautiful spectacle” in a social media post inviting visitors to join the festival.

“Ah Theth” features DJ sets, live performances and artists from different musical genres, alongside sporting activities and outdoor adventures. The programme is designed to combine entertainment with the natural and cultural attractions of the area.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to experience local hospitality and traditional flavours while exploring the surrounding mountain landscape.

The festival is part of efforts to further promote Theth as an important tourism destination, showcasing its natural heritage while offering visitors a combination of music, outdoor activities and local culture.

Agim Dardha, head of the Regional Administration of Protected Areas in Shkodra, said visitor numbers have continued to rise year after year, reinforcing the region’s position as one of Albania’s leading nature tourism hubs.

“Between January and June this year, the protected areas of Shkodra County welcomed 356,105 visitors, including 235,200 domestic tourists and 120,905 international visitors,” Dardha told Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA).

The most visited destination remains the Albanian Alps National Park, with Theth continuing to draw the largest number of tourists.

Other major attractions include the Grunas Waterfall, Blue Eye of Theth, the Grunas Canyon and the Stone Basin, as well as the scenic Theth-Valbona hiking trail, one of the most popular trekking routes in the Balkans. Meanwhile, the Shala River remains among the most visited sites within the region’s protected landscapes.

Dardha said tourism infrastructure and hiking trails are generally well maintained, but urged visitors to exercise caution when undertaking adventure activities.

He noted that some tourists continue to venture onto unmarked and technically demanding trails without local guides, increasing the risk of accidents and disorientation.

The steady increase in visitor numbers reflects growing interest in sustainable tourism and the exceptional natural heritage of northern Albania. Authorities continue to invest in trail maintenance, tourism infrastructure and destination promotion while seeking to preserve the region’s biodiversity and fragile ecosystems.

Prime Minister Edi Rama said a day ago that the works were carried out by the National Agency of Protected Areas as part of a wider project in the Albanian Alps National Park.

The interventions cover 15 kilometres of the trail and include new orientation signs, panoramic viewing platforms, rest areas and recreational zones.

Rama said the project aims to offer “an enhanced experience for all visitors,” while ensuring better infrastructure and safety along the mountainous route.

Shala River, a fabulous tourist destination in the northern Alps, has been described as Albania’s Thailand by a growing number of international visitors.

Flowing into Lake Koman, the 37-kilometer Shala River is known for its deep blue waters and dramatic alpine setting.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared a photo gallery showing the stunning road to the country’s northernmost tip on Wednesday.

“Leqet e Hotit, the spectacular mountain pass in Northern Albania, Shkoder,”  PM Rama wrote.

The road tops out by Leqet e Hotit mountain pass, at 730 meters above the sea level, is a sharply winding and precipitous ascent in a steep and narrow zig-zag segment leading to Vermosh, Kelmend and Malsia e Madhe areas.

Tucked away in the north-western part of Albania, the 30-km long road has been totally paved and it runs south-north from Hani i Hotit to Tamarë. The road also runs through immense rocky mountains, along the Cem river valley.

The mountain pass is known for its stunning landscapes and dramatic vistas. Nestled within the Albanian Alps, this pass offers a unique opportunity for tourists to immerse themselves in the breathtaking natural beauty of the region.
