Addressing a ceremony on the launch of ALBAdapt in Tirana, Tourism and Environment Minister  said that the project aims to support Albania improve its hydrometeorology service and implementation of a people-centered early warning and rescue systems.

Kumbaro said that thanks to the cooperation with German and Swiss partners, for the first time Albania is entitled to benefiting a fund of 35 million euros from the Green Climate Fund earmarked for efforts to tackle climate changes challenges and the civil emergencies.

ALBdapt is the outcome of a common project for the future, with the data on climate change and early warning systems becoming available to protect and save lives of the Albanian citizens.

Kumbaro underlined that Albania is rich in precious natural resources, but the country, also because of its geographical position, is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in Europe, with significant exposure to extreme weather and climate-related events.

According to her, ALBAdapt project will integrate most advanced meteorological technology and expertise from leading institutions, including the Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology of Switzerland. Modernizing Albania’s hydrometeorology infrastructure is also key aspect of the project.

Under ALBAdapt project, Albania becomes the first country in the region to access bilateral funds from the Green Climate Fund, aimed at addressing the country’s vulnerability to the climate changes, as well as delivering on its obligations under the ongoing EU accession negotiations.
