Beyond regular school hours, the programme aims to provide children with a safe and welcoming environment where they can develop their skills, work together and discover new talents and interests.

Under the programme, after having a meal and completing their homework, students will take part in sports activities and group games, as well as drawing, painting and creative crafts, recycled-material projects and practical activities.

The programme will also include reading, recitation and literary activities; music, singing and cultural activities; ICT and technology sessions; science experiments and practical activities; environmental and nature-care activities; as well as teamwork, educational games and activities designed to foster communication and cooperation.

Last year, the programme was piloted in 47 schools—45 in Tirana and two in Kamza—while this academic year it will be rolled out nationwide.

Deputy Minister of Education Herida Duro told ATA in an interview that the “Pas Shkolle” (After school) programme will be implemented at national level, expanding to more than 400 public pre-university education institutions. The programme now has the full legal and organisational framework required for nationwide implementation.

“The ‘Pas Shkolle’ programme is organised and structured around activities taking place outside compulsory school hours, with the aim of reinforcing learning and fostering the comprehensive development of students’ educational, social, sporting, cultural and creative skills.

It will be systematically rolled out across the entire pre-university education system, becoming a sustainable model that serves not only children but families and the wider community as well,” Duro said.

According to Duro, the programme aims to address the fragmentation of existing initiatives, such as Community School Centres, Homework Support, Art, Crafts, Sports and others, by establishing a clear framework for the implementation of the “Pas Shkolle” programme.

Meanwhile, Enkeleda Gorezi, principal of “Vaçe Zela” school in Tirana, told ATA that “this programme is a valuable opportunity for students, as it provides not only academic support but also spaces where they can express themselves, collaborate and develop their skills.”

“Our school was part of the programme during the previous academic year. The programme enabled students to make productive use of their time after classes, providing opportunities to develop their skills, talents and interests through sporting, creative, cultural, practical and technology-based activities,” she said.

Gorezi said that during the new school year, students will again remain on school premises for the hours allocated to the programme. Grades 1–3, which finish classes at 11:30 a.m., will stay until 2 p.m., while students in grades 4–5 and 6–9 will remain at school for the “Pas Shkolle” programme until 3 p.m.

Students take part in the programme based on their interests and willingness to participate in the activities offered for different age groups.

Principal Gorezi said the programme had been well received by parents. “They appreciated the fact that their children could remain in a safe and supervised environment after classes while taking part in meaningful activities. Parents showed particular interest in the sporting, creative and practical activities,” she said.

According to Gorezi, communication with parents was considered important to the programme’s implementation. Their suggestions and feedback helped identify students’ interests and improve the organisation of activities.

The programme aims to create a safe and enriching environment for children, while providing families and the wider community with a sustainable model of educational and developmental activities after regular school hours. /k.s/j.p/sm/
