The draft legislation proposed by two Socialist Party MPs and approved by the ruling majority in parliament’s last plenary session is seen by the centre-right opposition as a tool to grant a second term to Skënder Gjinushi, the current head of the Academy of Science.

The ruling Socialists claim that the legal changes will clear the way for the Albanian Diaspora to contribute to the Academy of Sciences.

In a post on the social media, the opposition MP Flutura Açka called on the head of state to turn down the law, saying “the academy belong to academics and not to politicians.”

She posted a letter addressed to President Bajram Begaj, demanding that he refuses to decree draft law on additions to Law 53/2019 on the Academy of Sciences, which she called “a clandestine draft law with which the working team of the Socialist majority openly violated the Parliament’s regulations and the Constitution of the Republic of Albania.”
