PRISTINA, Sept 14 /ATA/ PM of Kosovo Albin Kurti urged swift resolution of Kosovo’s presidential question, stressing the country is close to a political accord and cautioning that holding new elections would be irresponsible towards the public interest.

One day after parliament approved Kosovo’s new government, Prime Minister Albin Kurti told the first meeting of his “Kurti IV” cabinet that the main challenge now is the election of the president, noting that a political agreement is in place between Vetëvendosje (Self-Determination) and the Democratic League of Kosovo.

Kurti called on political leaders and MPs to implement the agreement reached, despite objections from some LDK deputies.

Parliament had only a day earlier approved the new government led by Albin Kurti. With institutions now formed, the election of the president remains the central political issue.

Vetëvendosje and the Democratic League of Kosovo engaged in talks to resolve the institutional stalemate and secure the votes required for the presidency. Although the two sides reached a political accord, the deal has been challenged by several LDK deputies.

Under Kosovo’s Constitution, electing the president requires at least 80 votes in the first two rounds. If no candidate secures that threshold, a third round is held where 61 votes suffice. For the voting process to take place, a minimum of 80 deputies must be present in the chamber.

If the president is not elected even in the third round, the Assembly is dissolved and new elections must be held within 45 days.
