TIRANA, Nov 14 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha said on Friday he had not received any summons from the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution Structure (SPAK) over the investigation into the 2011 anti-government protest in which four people were shot dead outside the Prime Minister’s office.

In a press statement, Berisha reiterated he would comply with any request from judicial authorities but accused the government of using the issue for political propaganda.

“I have always responded to any summons from the courts or prosecutors and will continue to do so,” Berisha said, adding that no notice had been delivered to his office, home or party headquarters. “From the date they claim it was sent until today, that document could have reached me five times. It has not arrived anywhere.”

Berisha, who was serving as Prime Minister at the time of the 21 January 2011 protest, said he had long called for a full investigation into what he described as “a violent attempt to topple a legitimate government.”

Berisha said he had sought the involvement of an international prosecutor in the January 21 case and that one had been appointed. He described the protest as “the most violent demonstration,” adding that the U.S. and EU had demanded a full investigation “from the police to the main organizer.”

During the press conference, Berisha also claimed the U.S. State Department had designated the Hysa brothers as a terrorist organization, alleging they had links to the government. He said international media were reporting that the brothers resembled “key parallels to Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel,” which he described as “one of the world’s most powerful criminal organizations.”

Berisha said DP may file a criminal complaint with SPAK regarding Luftar Hysa and his alleged connections with state officials.
