TIRANA, October 30 /ATSH/ – Renowned Albanian diplomat, politician, journalist, and political writer Bashkim Zeneli died today at the age of 78.
Zeneli had a long career in Albanian diplomacy and politics. He represented Albania as ambassador to Germany and Greece.
Throughout his career, Zeneli also served as a Member of the Parliament of Albania and as a member of the Political Council of the Socialist Party. He was also active in journalism and political writing, contributing articles, analyses and publications on political and diplomatic developments.
In 2018, the then-President Ilir Meta awarded him the title “Grand Master” in recognition of his contributions to foreign policy, journalism, political writing and his diplomatic representation of Albania.
Zeneli was also the author of several books of memoirs and diplomatic analyses—including “On Germany” and “Troubled Friendship”—in which he reflected on his diplomatic experience and Albania’s relations with other nations.
Speaker of the Parliament Niko Peleshi has expressed his condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the late diplomat Bashkim Zeneli. “It is sad news to hear of the passing of Bashkim Zeneli—a former Member of the Parliament of Albania, diplomat, publicist and one of the early intellectuals within the Socialist Party—who dedicated a long life to public service. Through his political contributions, parliamentary work and service as ambassador to Germany and Greece, Bashkim Zeneli made a valuable contribution to his country and to strengthening friendships with Albania’s neighbors and partners. Furthermore, through his writings and memoirs, he has left behind a significant record of the history of Albanian diplomacy,” stated Speaker of the Parliament Peleshi. /p.s./
