TIRANA, Oct. 19 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha said on Monday that dialogue with Prime Minister Edi Rama was not possible and that a political solution required Rama to leave office.
Speaking at a news conference, Berisha accused Rama of blocking political alternation through electoral manipulation and criminal activity.
“The time is critical. Never before have Albanians been called upon more urgently to take their fate into their own hands. These pupils and students are fighting like lions because the narco-dictator is stealing votes with the help of killers, traffickers and thugs, blocking political alternation,” Berisha said.
He called for Rama’s immediate departure, ruling out negotiations with the prime minister and arguing that any dialogue would involve people handpicked by Rama.
“Resign so that a political solution can be found. This revolt will not turn back. History is calling on Albanians once again to rise to the occasion. They must stand with the students,” he said.
Berisha urged teachers across Albania to support pupils and university students taking part in the protests and called on citizens to show solidarity with them.
“I call on Albania’s teachers to stand with their pupils and students and remain steadfast, because young people are putting their lives at risk so they can thrive and pursue their dreams in this country,” he said.
He also called on the International Red Cross to urgently mediate the establishment of humanitarian corridors to assist people injured during the protests.
“I urge the International Red Cross to intervene urgently to help establish corridors so that the injured can receive assistance,” Berisha said, referring to what he described as scenes involving dozens of protesters lying on the floor, unconscious or semi-conscious, at the Ministry of Education.
