TIRANA, Oct. 17 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha called on Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign on Saturday following violent protests across Albania.
Speaking to the media, Berisha urged Rama to step down immediately, warning against pushing Albania towards civil conflict.
“I tell Edi Rama once again: resign immediately. Do not lead Albania towards civil conflict, because you will be its main victim,” Berisha said.
“Resign and pave the way for a solution worthy of a NATO member state, a country with strong aspirations for European integration. Resign in the name of Albanians’ dreams, ideals and future,” he added.
Berisha described Saturday’s events in Tirana as a day of what he called the most extreme state violence and terror against young students and citizens.
He said civil disobedience had spread to Shkodër, Durrës, Elbasan, Vlorë, Korçë and other cities, following a general strike at universities and high schools a day ago.
“If yesterday was the day of a general strike by the country’s universities and high schools, today was the day of general civil disobedience by Albanian citizens across the country,” Berisha said.
Expressing solidarity with the protesters, he urged citizens to support the movement, citing what he described as a parental and civic duty to help restore the rule of law, freedoms and rights in Albania.
He also called on Democratic Party supporters and citizens across the country to mobilise in support of civil disobedience.
