Berisha rejects electronic vote counting in all municipalities

TIRANA, Oct. 12 /ATA/ – Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha on Monday rejected the introduction of electronic vote counting in the 2027 local elections in Albania, accusing the system of having been manipulated in previous polls.

Speaking at a news conference, Berisha said his main opposition party would not accept electronic counting in any municipality, following a proposal by the Central Election Commission (CEC) to expand electronic voting and counting in the elections for local government bodies in 2027.

Berisha’s remarks followed a meeting convened by the CEC to discuss electronic voting and counting. According to the commission, the Democratic Party does not support expanding the use of the technology in the next local elections.

“The Democratic Party will not accept it! Electronic vote counting has been shamefully manipulated,” Berisha said.

He alleged that the national intelligence service had been directly involved in the electronic counting process.

Berisha also claimed that parallel servers had been set up and that serious problems had occurred, saying his party would no longer accept any electoral mechanism it considered vulnerable to manipulation.

“We will no longer accept anything in the electoral process that can be manipulated,” he said.
