Health Minister: Tumor boards to be established at regional hospitals

TIRANA, Oct 6 /ATA/ – Health authorities are working on new guidelines to simplify procedures and improve patients’ access to oncology services, Health and Social Welfare Minister Klodiana Spahiu said during a visit to the Oncology Hospital in Tirana on Tuesday.

Spahiu said the guidelines were being drafted in consultation with doctors, with the aim of making access to cancer care easier for patients.

Speaking as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, known as Pink October, Health Minister also called for regular check-ups and early detection of breast cancer.

“Screening saves lives. Early diagnosis helps patients and their families and creates opportunities for timely intervention. I therefore urge every woman and girl to use this month to pay greater attention to her health,” Spahiu said.

She also announced plans to establish multidisciplinary tumor boards at regional hospitals with the necessary medical capacity, bringing specialist assessment closer to patients.

“We are working to establish tumor boards at regional hospitals where surgeons, oncologists and the necessary capacities are available, so that, where possible, patients do not have to travel all the way to the University Hospital Center of Tirana (QSUT),” Spahiu said.
