Spahiu: Support for youths leaving social care to build independent lives

TIRANA, Sept 28  /ATA/ Minister of Health and Social Welfare Klodiana Spahiu on Monday visited the ‘Family Home for Young People aged 16–18’ in Shkodër, where she saw first‑hand the daily routines, talents and future plans of young people receiving services at this facility.

During the visit, Minister Spahiu underlined the importance of supporting young people leaving the social care system, stressing the need to accompany them beyond the age of 18 with guidance, vocational training, job skills and concrete opportunities for integration into the labour market.

Spahiu said young people leaving social care have every opportunity and support to realise their future plans. At this stage, she noted, they must choose a direction, and particularly after turning 18 should be clear about the path ahead — professionally and practically — to integrate swiftly into the labour market, build their future and start their own families.

During the conversation, the young people spoke about their education, interests and aspirations. One mentioned attending the vocational school ‘28 Nëntori’, while another expressed a desire to join the army. Discussions with staff also highlighted the role of social workers, psychologists and carers in creating an enabling environment for the youths.

Spahiu told the young people that whatever concerns they may have should be shared openly within the group, urging them to draw on the love and support available in the centre to grow into responsible individuals. She assured them that their future is secure, as they are surrounded by committed people with foresight.”
