Multidisciplinary emergency unit reorganized under new management model to improve efficiency

TIRANA, Sept. 26 /ATA/ – Main emergency department at the Mother Teresa University Hospital in Tirana is being reorganised under a new management and operating model aimed at improving efficiency, team coordination and response times, Health and Social Welfare Minister Klodiana Spahiu said on Saturday.

The hospital’s multidisciplinary emergency unit treated about 91,000 patients between January and September 2026, Spahiu said.

Spahiu said the new model was designed to improve the organisation of processes and resources and raise the quality and efficiency of care across the emergency service.

Patients undergo an initial triage before being directed according to their respective codes, including white, yellow and red, to the observation area or other designated units, an emergency department staff member said.

Health Minister also stressed the need to prevent the emergency unit from being overwhelmed by cases that could be treated through primary healthcare.

“We need to ensure proper triage, but we also need greater awareness that cases that do not require emergency care and can be treated by a family doctor should be handled by the family doctor,” she said.

She also highlighted the importance of coordination with regional hospitals, particularly when patients are referred to the university hospital.

“If we can ensure proper triage and strong coordination with regional hospitals when cases are referred to the tertiary hospital, we will achieve our goal of improving the performance of the emergency unit at QSUT,” Spahiu said.
