Underwater Cultural Heritage: History’s hidden treasures

TIRANA, Aug 21 /ATA/ International Day of Underwater Cultural Heritage is marked each year on 21 August to raise awareness about the need to protect cultural heritage found beneath oceans, seas, rivers and lakes.

The first international underwater archaeology mission was launched under UNESCO auspices on 21 August 2022, involving eight countries. The day highlights the important role of underwater cultural heritage in science, education and cultural identity, while recognising the work of those dedicated to preserving it.

Underwater cultural heritage refers to traces of human activity found beneath the water that have historical, archaeological or cultural significance. It includes shipwrecks, ancient ports and settlements, archaeological structures, historic artefacts and submerged landscapes.

UNESCO and other organisations are raising the alarm over threats to this cultural heritage while promoting responsible and sustainable tourism and calling for an end to illegal activities. Above all, the international day brings people and countries together to build a global movement to protect underwater cultural heritage and ensure it remains preserved for present and future generations.
