TIRANA, Aug 21 /ATA/ – Albania’s Supreme Court has opened the procedure to elect a new chief justice to replace Sokol Sadushi, whose three-year term expires in October.
The procedure was launched within the required 60-day period ahead of the end of Sadushi’s mandate on Oct. 17, 2026. He was elected chief justice on Oct. 17, 2023.
Supreme Court judges who meet the legal requirements and wish to run for the position have until Sept. 11 to submit their expressions of interest and the required documentation, under rules approved by the High Judicial Council.
The election is expected to be completed before the current chief justice’s term ends, with the new head scheduled to take office on Oct. 18, 2026, ensuring continuity in the court’s operations.
The chief justice is elected by the Supreme Court’s General Assembly of judges from among its members through a secret ballot.
