Seven wildfires active, situation worst in northern Albania

TIRANA, Aug 20 /ATA/ – Seven of 10 wildfires recorded across Albania remained active on Thursday, with the most serious situation reported in the northern areas of Gojan and Gjegjan, the Defence Ministry said.

A total of 164 operational personnel and nine firefighting vehicles have been deployed, supported by 70 Armed Forces personnel, one firefighting vehicle and three helicopters.

Strong winds have fuelled the spread of fires in Gojan and Gjegjan, where forces are focused on protecting homes. Two helicopters and additional military personnel have been deployed to the area.

Fires were also active in Dajt, Lufaj, Tërbun, Gjorm i Sipërm, Tunjë e Re and Rraja e Velës. Two other fire sites were being monitored.

Authorities said there was currently no threat to populated areas. The National Civil Protection Agency was coordinating firefighting efforts across the country.

Operational capacities remain deployed and on standby, with priority given to protecting lives, homes and citizens’ property.
