EU-backed workshop empowers Tropoja women while preserving traditional crafts

TIRANA, July 20 /ATA/ An artisan workshop in the heart of Tropoja has become a model for preserving cultural heritage while promoting women’s economic empowerment.

Supported by the European Union through the EU4Innovation programme, the workshop’s women artisans are revitalizing traditional crafts while generating new employment and development opportunities for the local community. Wool and cotton are crafted into carpets, upholstery, traditional garments, embroidered textiles, bedspreads, bags and other handmade goods. In addition to textile production, the women also produce handmade soaps using natural ingredients, including olive oil, sage and thyme.

Through European Union support, the project has provided looms, sewing machines, digital equipment and an online platform that enables artisans to promote and sell their products beyond Tropoja. The creations are distinguished by traditional motifs that reflect the area’s cultural identity. Geometric patterns, eagles, colourful flowers and elements inspired by the Albanian Alps preserve the symbolism and history passed down through generations.

For many of the women, the workshop is more than just a workplace. It provides a stable source of income, a space for collaboration and an opportunity to pass their skills on to younger generations.

The initiative aims to combine tradition with innovation by preserving centuries-old crafts while creating new economic opportunities for women and the local community.
