Tax fraud department investigates 500 cases in construction and tourism

TIRANA, July 7 /ATA/ The Directorate of Tax Investigation, the specialized structure of the Tax Administration for investigating tax fraud, has fulfilled ahead of schedule one of the objectives set within the framework of the Reform Agenda and the Reform and Growth Facility (RGF), surpassing the target for handling tax fraud cases.

According to the official announcement from the Tax Administration, this result represents a concrete step in fulfilling Albania’s commitments in the process of integration into the European Union.

The target set was to investigate 500 tax fraud cases, primarily in high‑risk sectors such as construction, tourism, and other industries with heightened exposure to tax fraud, with a completion deadline of June 2027.

Yet, between January 1, 2024, and June 30, 2026, the Directorate of Tax Investigation successfully processed 509 cases, exceeding the target nearly a year ahead of schedule.

Out of these, 416 cases have been concluded, while 93 remain under active investigation and verification, in line with legal procedures.

This objective forms part of the Reform Agenda, approved by the Council of Ministers. Within this agenda, the Tax Administration is the institution responsible for implementing five reforms under Area 1 – Business Environment and Competition. These reforms aim to improve the business climate, strengthen fair competition, enhance transparency, and modernize tax administration, in accordance with European Union standards and acquis.

Completing this objective ahead of schedule demonstrates the effectiveness of the measures taken by the Tax Administration and, in particular, by the Directorate of Tax Investigation in preventing, uncovering, and investigating tax fraud. These efforts strengthen the integrity of the tax system and ensure fair competition in the market.

At the same time, this achievement confirms the successful implementation of reforms undertaken within the European integration process, showcasing tangible progress in meeting Albania’s commitments to the European Union.
