Baçi says AmCham report highlights sharp criticism of government economic model

TIRANA, June 25 /ATA/ Opposition MP Luan Baçi has described the latest AmCham Business Index 2025-2026 report as one of the strongest criticisms yet of the country’s economic model and governance.

In a press briefing from the parliamentary presidency, Luan Baçi said the business confidence index has seen a significant decline, falling to 40.34 points out of 100.

“This is an alarming signal that clearly shows businesses are losing confidence in institutions, the market, and Albania’s economic direction,” he said.

Baçi said that “today we have a government that speaks of strategic investments, while businesses speak of monopolies. The government talks about reforms, while businesses talk about bureaucracy. The government talks about economic growth, while businesses speak of corruption, insecurity, and a lack of fair competition. This is the difference between propaganda and reality.”

Baçi said that the government can no longer hide behind propaganda or manipulated statistics, adding that the erosion of investor confidence has direct consequences for the economy and for competition within the country.

He also linked the economic situation to recent protests in the country.

“The fight against corruption and organised crime, the fight against clientelism, demands for Western-standard education and healthcare, as well as the protection of public property and the national interest are at the centre of their demands,” he said.

According to Baçi, the primary responsibility for this situation lies with Prime Minister Edi Rama and his model of governance.

Baçi said Albania needs a new model of governance, where the rule of law, fair competition, genuine anti-corruption efforts, property protection, and support for entrepreneurship are national priorities rather than political slogans.

“The time for excuses is over. The American Chamber of Commerce report is a wake-up call showing that the Albanian economy pays the daily price of corruption, clientelism, and misgovernance. Albania deserves more. Albanians deserve more. And this change can no longer wait,” he said.
