TIRANA, May 18 /ATA/ On the occasion of International Museum Day in the city of Lezhë, the Archaeological Museum was inaugurated on Monday, a project supported by the European Union.
The museum, located beside the city’s castle, houses a collection of artifacts ranging from prehistory to the Middle Ages, offering a thorough portrayal of the region’s historical evolution.
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Blendi Gonxhja, the Director General of SASPAK, Eridana Çano, the representative of the Delegation of the European Union to Albania, Entela Sulka, the Mayor of Lezhë, Pjerin Ndreu, and other distinguished guests were present at the opening ceremony.
The inauguration of this museum instils in us a profound sense of pride. At the same time, it allows visitors to gain an ever-deeper appreciation of our identity, which is firmly rooted in the European tradition within the Mediterranean context.
The Mayor of Lezhë, Pjerin Ndreu, emphasized that this museum enriches the mosaic of cultural treasures and tourist attractions offered by Lezhë, providing the city with another significant point of reference for both local and international visitors.
The Head of Cultural Heritage in Lezhë, Paulin Zefi, stated that a total of 268 objects are housed in this museum. The majority of them belong to discoveries made by archaeologist Frano Prendi during the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, the museum also includes archaeological findings from German expeditions as well as various incidental discoveries.
The distinctive feature of this museum lies in the innovative experience it offers, through the possibility of undertaking a virtual visit to the Craft Room in Gjakova. In this way, it connects cultural heritage across borders and brings history closer to tourists and visitors.
The Archaeological Museum of Lezhë has been financed by the European Union through the Albania–Kosovo cross-border project. It is the second museum to be opened in the city, following the Ethnographic Museum established several years ago.
