Speaker Peleshi: “EU for Democracy” project to strengthen Albania parliament’s capacities

TIRANA, April 16 /ATA/ – Parliament Speaker, Niko Peleshi, said on Thursday that the “EU for Democracy” project would help strengthen the institutional capacity of parliament, as Albania advances its European integration efforts.

Peleshi made the remarks during a meeting with the head of the Delegation of the European Union to Albania, Ambassador Silvio Gonzato, the representative of the European Parliament’s regional office in Tirana, Tatiana Mrazikova, and members of the IDEA +7 team.

Discussions focused on the need to deepen inter-institutional cooperation between Albania’s parliament and the European Parliament, seen as a key driver in accelerating the country’s EU accession process.

Peleshi said enhanced cooperation with EU institutions and participation in EU support programmes were directly contributing to strengthening parliament’s role and raising democratic standards.

The three-year “EU for Democracy” project, funded by the European Union and implemented by IDEA +7, was also presented at the meeting.

The initiative aims to boost the administrative capacity of parliament by reinforcing oversight mechanisms and modernising parliamentary services in line with European standards.

Participants said such initiatives represent a concrete step towards consolidating democratic institutions and advancing Albania’s European integration agenda.
